Media Release – 10 January 2013
MND REVIEW OF TCs AND AIM TRANSACTION WELCOME AND SHOULD PROCEED
Since mid-December 2012, there has been much discussion and concern about whether the 14 PAP-managed Town Councils had acted in the public interest in selling their computing and financial software systems to Action Information Management Pte Ltd (AIM) before General Election 2011. Despite various media statements by AIM and PAP representatives, critical questions remained unanswered, which led me to file an adjournment motion on 8 January 2013 on safeguarding the public interest in Town Council management, scheduled for the next Parliamentary sitting.
On the evening of 8 January 2013, the Prime Minister indicated in a statement that he had directed the Ministry of National Development to conduct a broad-based review of the fundamental nature of town councils and also to investigate the AIM transaction. Given this latest, welcome development, I believe the goal of protecting the public and residents’ interests would be better served if the government investigation and review were to first proceed. After the completion of the review and publication of its findings, the matter can be raised in Parliament again as the circumstances require.
In view of these considerations, I will be withdrawing the adjournment motion scheduled for 14 January 2013. On its part, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council is ready to provide its input to MND for the review.
