AHTC Launches Inaugural Carnival To Promote Green and Sustainable Practices Among Residents
The constituency-wide initiative is independently undertaken by the town council, aimed at promoting greater sustainability awareness
Singapore, 18 March 2023 – Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (“AHTC”), the autonomous estate management entity covering over 50,000 public housing units within the constituencies of Aljunied and Hougang, launched its inaugural Let’s Paint The Town Green Carnival (“Green Carnival”) today, coinciding with Global Recycling Day.
Located at Hougang Central Hub, outside Hougang Mall, the Green Carnival is a constituency-wide sustainability initiative and the first-of-its-kind undertaken by AHTC, aimed towards building greater sustainability awareness among residents in Aljunied and Hougang, and helping them to foster an environmentally-conscious lifestyle.
The Green Carnival adopted a fun and interactive approach towards helping residents learn about sustainability. Running from 10am to 1pm, there were activities scheduled across all age groups including carnival games, upcycling workshops and learning sessions hosted by an eco artist and waste management experts from various corporate and social enterprises. These included:
- ezi – Earning Cash-for-Trash with Sembcorp’s Recycling Mobile App
- ALBA – Managing E-waste Collection and Disposal
- Life Line Clothing – Textile Recycling
- Soap Cycling – Giving Soap A Second Lease of Life
- Dow – Building Sports Infrastructure with Repurposed Footwear
- Eco Artist Putri Tikus Art – Learning to Make Art from Waste
AHTC staff also provided Green Carnival attendees with eco-friendly gifts, such as reusable tote bags to deter the future use of environmentally-unfriendly, single-use plastics.
The Green Carnival was also attended by Aljunied-Hougang Town Council representatives Mr Leon Perera, Mr Gerald Giam and Mr Pritam Singh, who welcomed attendees and engaged them on the importance of incorporating environmentally-friendly and sustainable practices into their lives.
Mr Dennis Tan, Chairman, Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, said: “We are delighted to launch the Green Carnival today, with support from many of our town council partners. The Green Carnival offers practical ideas and solutions for residents that will hopefully encourage them to embrace an environmentally-friendly and socially-responsible lifestyle.
The Green Carnival will bring about many benefits in the longer-term, helping to emphasise the importance of sustainability for many generations to come. The town council is committed to creating a cleaner, greener and more sustainable estate for all its residents.”
The Green Carnival is part of AHTC’s resident-centric five-year plan to transform Aljunied and Hougang into a liveable, inclusive and sustainable town of the future. AHTC is fully committed towards promoting Singapore’s sustainability and environmental goals, and is actively engaging with its constituents for feedback through its resident outreach and estate maintenance programmes.
AHTC will explore the return of the event in subsequent years, including potentially expanding the event in partnership with stakeholders.
